Water lawns 1 inch (2-3 cm) per week during dry periods
Why
In Saskatchewan, we double our water consumption in the summer months. Lawn watering is a huge consumer of water, and we may be creating weak grass by the way we water.
How
Exactly how much and when to water depends on the type of soil you have. However, in Saskatchewan you can assume that your grass wants 1 inch (2-3 cm) of water once a week. Set a Frisbee or empty tuna can on your lawn (or a few scattered around). Turn on your sprinklers, and leave them on until the Frisbee and tins are full. Record how long that takes. When it has been dry out, turn on your sprinkler for that long, once a week. Remember, if it has rained, your lawn shouldn’t need water.
