Install faucet aerators on bathroom faucets

Why

Standard aerators have a flow rate of 8.3litres/minute (2.2gallons/minute).  WaterSense® approved aerators are rated for 5.7litre/minute (1.5 gallons/minute).  Switching from 8.3 to 5.7litres per minute will save you 30% of the water used at that tap. Aerators rated as low as 2litre/minute are available.

According to the WaterSense website “Replacing old, inefficient faucets and aerators with WaterSense labeled models can save the average family 700gallons (2600litres) of water per year, equal to the amount of water needed to take 45 showers. Also, since these water savings reduce demands on water heaters, households will also save enough energy to run a hairdryer 17 minutes a day for a year. Achieving these savings can be as easy as twisting on a WaterSense labeled aerator, which can cost as little as a few dollars.”

How

Faucet aerators are inexpensive (<$10) and very easy to switch.  Simply thread off the old aerator, and thread on the new.  You can buy them at most hardware stores.  Choose a WaterSense® certified aerator to ensure it is low flow, and look at the flow rate to get the most efficient one available.
