Install awnings to keep summer heat out and let winter heat in

Why

In winter and in summer the sun can pour a lot of heat into our buildings. In the winter, that is great. Let the sun in. In the summer, that overheats our buildings or makes our air conditioning run longer.

How

If you are renovating, install awnings over your south windows. Choose the size and location of the awnings to keep the summer sun out, but let the winter sun in. Use a free online program like SketchUp, or your old protractor and a straight edge to figure out the best location for your awnings. In Saskatoon, at noon on June 21, the sun is 61o from the horizon. On December 21, it is 14o.
