Make sustainability part of each person’s job description
Just like safety can’t be one person’s responsibility in an organization, sustainability needs to be vertically integrated.
Ensure that each person’s job description includes sustainability indicators and targets.
For example, at Steam Whistle Brewing all managers’ job descriptions include: “Champion Steam Whistle’s environmental policies with your department by supporting waste diversion, water conservation and energy saving measures. Keep abreast of industry developments, and seek out new, environmentally responsible policies, procedures, products, services or suppliers to continually reduce Steam Whistle’s environmental footprint.”
All staff job descriptions include: “Implement Steam Whistle’s environmental policies by participating in waste diversion (recycling and composting) programs and being aware of water conservation and energy-saving measures such as turning off taps, lights, engines or other equipment.”
